Why we do this
Our clinic showcases a rotating gallery of artworks by local artists who have one thing in common: they're current or former patients of Radius.
Each artist features in our space for a season, with their work hanging in our reception area and exam rooms. It's a way of letting our patients into the lives of other patients — to see, in art, the people who have walked through our door, healed, and gone back out into the world.
On our walls now
Steve Caldwell — Abstract Expressionism, Color Field Painting, and fluid painting.
Radius Physical + Sports Rehab is proud to feature local Grass Valley artist Steve Caldwell as part of our rotating artist showcase.
Steve's work blends Abstract Expressionism, Color Field Painting, and fluid painting, using liquid acrylics and other fluid media to explore motion, texture, depth, and organic forms. His paintings are shaped by both natural chemical interactions and intentional artistic direction, creating pieces that feel alive with movement, contrast, and emotion.
Inspired by patterns found in nature — from leaf veins and cloud formations to fire, flowers, stone, water, and even the vastness of space — Steve invites viewers to look closely, step back, and discover their own interpretations within each piece.
A retired Grass Valley local, Steve is also an avid woodworker and photographer. His art often incorporates non-traditional tools and materials, including construction brushes, rollers, trowels, reclaimed wood, old doors, metal sheets, and other repurposed surfaces. This gives his work a unique sense of scale, texture, and sustainability.
I seek abstract emulations of nature as my muse, such as the veins in a leaf; cloud and land formations as viewed from high above; inside the rage of an inferno; the soft petals and stamens of a flower; even the sparkle and conflict of time and space.
Commissions
Steve accepts commissions, with each piece typically taking 2–3 months to complete. More of his work can be found on Facebook at scaldwellstudios, and he can be reached directly at caldwellcom@gmail.com.
