PLAN YOUR VISIT

What to expect on your first visit

Your first visit at Radius is a full-hour diagnostic exam. Here's what happens, what to bring, and what we'll cover — plus everything you need to know about insurance and intake.

Welcome

A Radius provider reviews a patient's medical history from a clipboard as she sits and talks with him during her first visit

Our staff will greet you, and answer any questions you have before getting you set up with a little bit of new patient paperwork (also available in advance through email).

What to bring

Bring a photo ID and your insurance card, if applicable. That's really all you need. Water, tea, and coffee are available at the clinic, so come as you are and we'll take care of the rest.

What to wear

Wear loose-fitting or flexible clothing. Several of the orthopedic tests involve moving through different ranges of motion, and restrictive clothing can get in the way. It also helps if the injured area is reasonably accessible, since part of the exam and any hands-on treatment may involve palpating or working directly on it. If your elbow is the problem, for example, a short-sleeved shirt works well. Comfortable, everyday athletic wear is perfect. Above all, dress in whatever lets you feel at ease.

Medical history

Your provider will review your medical history with you, including all factors that may be contributing to your condition. This baseline understanding of where you've been helps uncover indications and contraindications toward rendering a diagnosis.

Orthopedic and neuromuscular tests + functional movement analysis

A Radius provider supports a seated patient's shoulder and guides her extended arm during an orthopedic and neuromuscular movement test

Every injury or pain condition is different. In order for your provider to pinpoint the origin of your pain (not always right where it hurts!), he/she performs relevant orthopedic tests which rule in or rule out the root cause. This portion of the exam is often active, rather than sedentary (like medical history discussion).

Diagnosis + report of findings

We are all about education. Once an accurate diagnosis is rendered, we share our findings with you - in easily understood terms. It's helpful to understand why pain may have come about, and what types of repetitive movements or sustained postures exacerbate the condition.

Treatment at your first visit

A Radius provider performs manual therapy on a patient's shoulder and arm as she lies face-up on the treatment table

We don't like to waste time - yours or ours. If you are a candidate for care, based on your diagnosis, we will proceed with treatment right away to get you on your way to full recovery.

Practical details

Beyond what happens during your visit, you'll want to know about insurance, intake forms, and special billing situations.
